The telegraph system was not without its faults. One of the main problems was caused by a very small amount of carbon in the steel wires used to transmit the “beep” and “hiss”. This caused the transmitters to “ring” loudly when the system was switched on. Another problem with the system was that when trains were running, the telegraph system often switched to a different frequency when they were not going by.
